Abitibi Recycling provides this program and collection service at no charge to each location. Bright green and yellow containers - called Paper Retrievers - are placed in highly visible, convenient areas where residents can drop off their newspaper, magazines, shopping catalogs and mail. Usually, the majority of the paper is received from the surrounding neighborhoods. Even areas that already provide curbside recycling are successful in raising money by providing a convenient place to drop off paper when families know that your organization will benefit from their donation.
Paper is collected and weighed at the time of collection on the trucks. A monthly statement detailing the amount of paper collected for the month is usually accompanied by a check for the amount collected over the minimum of two tons.
The Paper Retriever program has been recognized nationally for its successful
recovery rate. Abitibi Recycling is committed to providing this program since
we are an end user of the paper we collect. Recovered paper is directed to
processing centers where it is sorted into various grades and prepared for
shipment. It is then routed to the de-inking facilities and mills where it is
used to manufacture 100% recycled content newsprint. By diverting this paper from
the waste stream, we estimate that over 2.2 million cubic yards of landfill space
is saved each year. In addition, by eliminating our groundwood and kraft pulping
operations, Abitibi-Consolidated reduced
air emissions and waste water discharges at our newsprint mill in Sheldon, Texas.
